The drive down Highway 1 is stunning! One can make a day trip, weekend trip or even a week’s worth of a trip exploring bits of HWY 1 or the whole thing. In one day I explored bits and parts of HWY 1. It goes all along the coastline with amazing views. My intention of driving down HWY 1 was to see McWay Falls but didn’t realized there was so much more along the way.
To view McWay Falls there’s an easy 10-minute stroll. There is parking along the road or you can turn into Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park where there will be plenty more parking. Once there you go through a tunnel and start the easy walk to view the Falls.
On the way back from McWay Falls there was a cute bus that has been turned into a Café where they also had ice cream. Their piña colada ice cream was delicious! It's located by the River Inn, in Big Sur.
Another great spot to stop for views is the Bixby Bridge. Don’t make the mistake I did and be sure to take a sweater because even in the middle of the summer it can be chilly!
Lastly, the trip ended in Davenport where I went to check out the swing on the beach. To find this spot you can gps 'Davenport Pier.' Once parked you'll see train tracks. You pass those and walk towards the cliff. You can trek down to the swing but it can be dangerous if you’re not careful! I would love to go on the swing one day. The waves crashing in make it intimidating though!
