Saving Money to Travel

Many people have asked me how I’m able to afford to travel. The answer is simple. I set a goal, put money in my savings account and I don’t touch it for a few months. Back in January I decided I needed to fill my travel bug for the year. I feel the constant need to be somewhere new. My goal is to go somewhere new every year. This year I decided South America. I had 7 months to save up. I opened a savings account and put in a couple hundred dollars in every week. I never touched this money and it quickly started to add up.

I’m like any other person my age. I enjoy going out and having a few drinks. I enjoy having new ‘materialistic’ things. I love eating out. But I also know what makes my soul richer than all of those other things; traveling. Traveling to me is an experience that no one can ever take away from me. I know I can’t eat out every night. I know I can’t have new clothes every week. I know my limits.

Once I decide on a time and place of travel I do research for HOURS even DAYS to find the best deals. I don't just settle for the first best sounding deal I find. Some times it can get a little frustrating because my preferred travel dates don't work out with he best deals. (It’s better to be flexible about travel.)

Traveling doesn’t always have to be a “luxurious” experience. By this I mean that you don’t have to stay in a 5 star hotel everywhere you go. There are cheaper options such as couch surfing (free), hostels, camping and home-stays. You’re not traveling to stay in a hotel all day. You’re traveling to immerse yourself into a place outside your room. It’s not the where you stay that makes the experience, it’s the adventures you have outside of it.
